A career in teaching not only gives you the opportunity to have a positive impact on the life of pupils, it also benefits from a good starting salary and annual salary increases. From day one, teachers have access to a wide range of financial benefits as part of their pay package.

How much do teachers earn?
Teaching in Scotland offers a competitive salary that grows with your experience. After completing your probationary year, you’ll move up the pay scale annually, with your salary rising through increments as you develop in your role.
From 1 August 2025, probationary teachers earn £34,938, rising to £35,022 from 1 April 2026. Once you’re fully registered, your starting salary increases to £41,916, with annual increments taking you to £52,614 over your first five years. From 1 April 2026, these figures rise to £42,018 and £52,740 respectively.
For those who progress into leadership, the earning potential continues to grow. Headteachers in Scotland can earn up to £120,162 a year, rising to £120,450 from 1 April 2026.
